What It’s Like to Have a Panic Attack While You Preach

anxietyI don’t talk about it much but I struggle with depression and anxiety. I have for a long time. Sometimes it seems like no big deal, sometimes it is a very big deal. For the most part, I am fortunate as I know many people have struggles much worse than mine.

One of the ways my struggles like to show up once in awhile is with panic attacks. I don’t really like the term panic attack, there is something about the term that I have never really been comfortable with. But that is what they are, panic attacks. There is no reason for them, but they happen sometimes. Sometimes I do have provoked anxiety attacks but more often than not, there is no reason for me to be feeling what I am feeling.

I have been fortunate for the most part that these attacks have shown up when no one else is around and nothing significant is happening. Usually I’m in bed, or just getting ready for the day.

That is usually, but there was one time it was different.

One time the ugly monster of panic overwhelmed me just before I was about to preach.

What Brexit Can Teach The Church

eu flagThis past week Great Britain made a bold decision to it’s future. By a very narrow margin they voted to leave the European Union, leaving behind a legacy as one of the founding nations to push for the union. While there are both benefits and disadvantages to being part of the European Union (none of which I am going to write about),  I think there is something significant about the outcome that church members and leaders should take note of. Something that speaks a great deal to the practice of the local church.

The decision to leave the European Union has already demonstrated some of the negative repercussion for Great Britain, and time will show what benefits there may be. But who will be there to see the benefits or repercussions in years to come is what I find most interesting.

The difference politics can’t make

vote-canadaIn about 5 minutes the polls will close on the 42nd Canadian Election. As I watch the news to see the updates of polls already closed, I am anticipating the social media posts of both joy and disgust at what is about to unfold in this great country.

I have a deep appreciation for politics. While I believe in the separation of Church and State, I believe the Church should be politically thoughtful. Politics informs policies, which affect people, and people matter to God. And I believe that political parties are trying to address the same problem that the church is, but don’t use the same word to express it. (more…)
